Joellen W Hawkins PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, FAAN, NAP, FAANP
Joellen Hawkins is professor emeritus at Boston College, William F. Connell School of Nursing. From 1983-2007 she was director of the WHNP program. A graduate of Boston College's first class of the women's health and pediatric primary health care nurse clinicians, Dr. Hawkins has been a pioneer in the evolution of the nurse practitioner role. She has created a student health service at a new campus for Roger Williams College using a nursing model; practiced for 5 years at the University of Connecticut Student Health Services Women's Clinic (a nurse practitioner model); helped create the nurse-managed clinic for seniors in Mansfield, CT; practiced for 16 years at a nurse managed women's reproductive health clinic; and practiced at a community health center in Boston for 9 years and at a women's clinic in a homeless shelter in Boston for 6 years. Dr. Hawkins has been mentor to countless NP students and clinical preceptors for over 30 years. In her retirement, she continues to mentor her MS and PhD graduates, serve in the FAANP mentoring program, and is writer in residence for the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Simmons College, Boston, as well as editing for graduate students and faculty at other institutions. Her 37th book just came out.
