Dr. Houghton has an extensive background in critical care, spanning more than three decades. He is a national leader in advancing the role of the nurse practitioner within the critical care environment. Dr. Houghton has expertise in prevention and treatment of nosocomial infection and end of life care, and has published and lectured on these and other topics frequently at a national and international level. He is educated as a family and acute care nurse practitioner, and holds national certification in acute care and in critical care nursing. He is the co-editor of the textbook "Critical Care: Role, concepts and practice for the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner", which earned the American Journal of Nursing's Book of the Year award for emergency/critical care in 2009. Dr. Houghton holds a Master's degree in Nursing from Barry University and a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of North Florida. He is the Associate Chief Nursing Officer for Advanced Practice and leads advanced practice at the University of Miami Health System, Miami FL with part time clinical practice in critical care.
