Kathy Wheeler, PhD, RN, APRN, FNP-BC, FNAP, FAANP, recently retired from teaching in the DNP Program at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing, but volunteers at Mission Frankfort, a clinic that serves the underserved in Frankfort, Kentucky. In 2025, Kathy was honored to receive the FAANP Legacy Award. Kathy served many years as the AANP Treasurer, AANP Region 4 Director, AANP Kentucky State Representative, Board Liaison to the AANP International Committee, and Co-Chair of the AANP International Special Interest Group. She was instrumental in founding the Kentucky Association of Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Midwives, the AANP International Ambassador Program, and the AANP International Committee. For many she also served as Co-Chair of the ICN NP/APN Network Health Policy Subgroup as well as a Commissioner on the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board. She has presented and published extensively nationally and internationally. Areas of practice, interest, and research include health policy, international NP/APN issues, diabetes care, medication adherence, credentialing and competence, and the future of advanced practice.
