Gwen L Rohde Witzel APRN, FNP, FAANP
Gwen Witzel has experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner in primary care in a rural health clinic, emergency room and critical access hospital, and also has practiced as an independent locum provider in undeserved areas. Currently she is employed as a Hospitalist in a level 1 trauma center at Sanford Health Center in Fargo, ND.
She was honored as the 2009 North Dakota Rural Health Provider of the Year. She is a co-founder of the ND Nurse Practitioner Association and was instrumental in passing legislation recognizing NPs as primary care providers for Medicaid recipients in 2011 and in 2013 was on the team of NPs instrumental in elimination of the collaborative agreement allowing North Dakota NPs to have full practice authority. She is committed to promoting the Nurse Practitioner profession by serving as a preceptor to NP students. She was honored as the University of North Dakota NP Alumni of the year in 2015. She previously served as AANP Board of Director Region 8 and as AANP North Dakota State Representative. Ms. Witzel served as adjunct faculty for the NP program at University of Mary in Bismarck as the co-developer of the rural health curriculum. She remains active with health policy promoting NP practice and serves on the national advisory committee for National Health Service Corp with HRSA in Washington DC with a goal to improve access to care in rural areas. She was inducted as a fellow to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners in 2012. Gwen Witzel was honored to receive the 2017 North Dakota Nurse Practitioner State Award for Excellence.
