Dr. Debra Shelby is Managing Member, CEO, and Clinical Director of Florida Specialty Medical Services, LLC, in the Dermatology and Dermstaffing Divisions, and CEO of the National Institute for Dermatology, LLC, both in Tampa, Florida. She is also CEO of New Mexico Specialty Medical Services, LLC in Albuquerque.
Dr. Shelby attended Barry University in Miami, where she earned a Master of Science in Nursing, and became a Family Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP). She completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in 2008 from the University of South Florida, where she developed and completed the first national dermatology residency program for NPs in the country. In 2014, Dr. Shelby earned a PhD with a cognate in Dermatology/Biomedical Research. She is ANCC board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC), Certified Dermatology Nurse Practitioner (DCNP), and has earned multiple-specialty nursing board certifications, including Perioperative, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Her past role as Clinical Specialist at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa allowed her to gain valuable experience in medical and surgical oncology, including being educated by leaders in cutaneous oncology research and treatment.
Dr. Shelby is the Founder and President of the National Academy of Dermatology Nurse Practitioners (NADNP); Founder, Board Director, and Fellow of the American College of Dermatology Nurse Practitioners (ACDNP); and a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Her 28 years of healthcare experience include 17 years as a medical and surgical dermatology nurse practitioner and over 20 years of multi-specialty surgical experience. Throughout her career, she has served as an international dermatology expert, presents internationally on medical and surgical dermatology, chairs national dermatology conferences and educational programs, and has published articles, blogs, and sits on editorial boards for peer-reviewed journals. For more than 16 years, she has served as an expert consultant for the medical and legal communities. Dr. Shelby’s community service ranges from free dermatology care for the underserved to donations to a multitude of charities from funds raised by the NADNP annual conferences. To date, her work through NADNP has funded more than 1,000 scholarships for NP dermatology education.
