Karen Sue Hoyt PhD, RN, FNP-BC, ENP-C, FAEN, FAANP, FAAN
Dr. Hoyt is a Professor and Director of the NP/ENP programs at the University of San Diego. She is also the inaugural Editor of the Advanced Emergency Nursing Journal (since 2006). She is an emergency nurse practitioner (ENP) in the Migrant Health.
Dr. Hoyt has been an active AANP fellow since 2008, was the AANP State Representative for California from 2010-2012. She served on the Fellows Board as the Member-at-Large from 2010-2012. Dr. Hoyt is currently the Chair of the AAENP Validation Committee and is on the American Academy of Nurse Practitioner Certification Board Scheme Committee for ENP Certification (ENP-C) and the exam commenced 1/1/17.
Sue has given hundreds of presentations both nationally and internationally. She has testified in Washington, DC about 9-1-1 and wireless communications. Her research contributions include emergency, leadership, certification, and heuristic topics (cognitive errors). She served as the lead author for the Delphi Study on "Competencies for Nurse Practitioners in Emergency Care" (published in the Journal of Emergency Nursing, 2010).
As a consultant, Dr. Hoyt has assisted other organizations in developing their competencies. Sue has also conceptualized and implemented a 2-day minor procedures course for NPs and then developed a train-the-trainer course for NP faculty. Sue has taught several of these workshops for NPs across the country.
She has written ENP continuing education programs for various ED groups (e.g., The Sullivan Group). Her news book series with co-author Sheila Sanning Shea includes The Pocket NP for Family-Emergent, Urgent and Ambulatory Care, The NP Pocket for Pediatrics, and The NP Pocket for Geriatrics.
Dr. Hoyt is the Past President of ENA and served as the first Chair of the Emergency Nurses Association’s (ENA's) Trauma Committee. She was the Co-Editor of ENA's Trauma Nursing Core Course Provider and Instructor Manuals. The TNCC course has been given to over 500,000 nurses in 14 countries worldwide since its inception. After her term as ENA President in 1997, Dr. Hoyt she co-edited the Emergency Nursing Core Curriculum, the official core curriculum publication of ENA.
Dr. Hoyt has received numerous honors and awards, including the 2008 AANP California State Award for Excellence, the 2010 Frank Cole National ENA NP of the Year Award and the 2010 Judith C. Kelleher Award (ENAs most prestigious honor). In 2013, Dr. Hoyt was the recipient also of the USD Alumni Achievement Award.
