Jose A Pares-Avila DNP, MA, RN, APRN, LMHC, NP-C, FAANP
Dr. Jose Pares-Avila is a Clinical Professor and Associate Dean for Community Engagement at the Washington State University College of Nursing in Spokane, WA. An Adult NP who is a certified HIV Specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine, his expertise in HIV and LGBTQ+ health is evidenced by multiple accomplishments over his 30 years as a nurse and a mental health professional. He is a Pride Scholar and LGBT Health Education and Research Trust Scholar, which recognized his potential as an LGBT advocate in the NP profession. Dr. Parés-Ávila is also the University of Washington School of Nursing 2007 Outstanding Humanitarian and the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. Dr. Pares-Avila has had clinical positions as an NP at Community Health Association of Spokane in Spokane, WA and at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System where he was the system-wide HIV NP and HIV Coordinator. Between 2016-20 he practiced full-time at the Psychiatric Emergency Service in Harborview Medical Center and the General Internal Medicine Center at the University of Washington Medical Center, both part of UW Medicine, He has held faculty positions at the UCDavis Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing where he was Founding Faculty and at The University of Arizona College of Nursing. He has recently joined the faculty of the University of South Florida College of Nursing in Tampa, FL. He has had leadership posts at the National Association of Hispanic Nurses and served on the Board of Directors of GLMA: Health Professionals for LGBTQ Equality.
