Kathleen T McCoy DNSc, APRN, PMHNP-BC, PMHCNS-BC, FNP-BC, FAANP, FNKF
Dr. McCoy is the most recent (2025) recipient of the AANP Fellows Chair Award for recognition of her exemplary support and contributions to the Fellows. An Associate Professor, University of South Alabama, Mobile AL, Department of Community/Mental Health, School of Nursing, Dr. McCoy models, and teaches online in the DNP as well as the PMHNP programs. She is known for integrative practice, innovative teaching, and active policy participation. She is board certified as an Adult Psychiatric Mental Health CNS (PMHCNS-BC), a Family NP (FNP-BC), and a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). Dr. McCoy is a two-term 5 year Chair of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Content Expert Panel (CEP) and is currently on the CEP of the ANCC PMHNP Preparation Exam.. She practices in a dual role of Family NP and Psych Mental Health NP/CNS and practices with a focus upon recovery aspects of PTSD using somatic approaches and Cognitive Processing Therapy. She has completed 3 years as Co-PI on a Christus Spohn generated DSRIP grant to develop the PMH workforce in Corpus Christi and its surrounding area on behalf of Border Health in a community engagement initiative. She resides in the beautiful Upper Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee. She has completed the highly competitive 2018 University of Alabama 6 month certificate Center for Clinical and Translational Research Science Training Program. Currently, Dr. McCoy recently spent 5 years engaging in telehealth services (Refugee Centered Federally Qualified Medical Home) serving the Midwest, Plains, Minnesota and North Dakota.. Dr. McCoy has been awarded the 2023 American Psychiatric Nurse Association Excellence in Leadership-APRN distinction, and currently is publishing findings as the PI in researching mthods to educate APRN students how to recognize and manage implicit bias as a project secondary to her status as a 2022 University of South Alabama Community Engaged Faculty Fellow. She Chaired the AANP Fellows Career Enrichment Initiative (Mentoring and Coaching Circles) since 2019 though June 30, 2026. She has recently published the Williams McCoy Motivational Interviewing Cognitive Behavioral Spirited Communication Model (2024) and is the Associate Chair of the American Psychiatric Nurse Association (APNA) Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council and contributing author of the APNA DEI Policy Brief (2024).
