Sheila Kathleen Smith PhD, RN, ANP-BC, AGACNP-BC, FAANP
Dr. Sheila K. Smith, Clinical Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, is an Adult Nurse
Practitioner and an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with practice expertise in chronic disease management, community-based
approaches, vulnerable and underserved populations, women's health, and LGBT healthcare needs. She also serves as Specialty Coordinator for the U of MN Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner program. Dr. Smith has served as nursing faculty and academic administrator for 30 years with appointments as Dean at Pacific Lutheran University, Associate Dean for Academics at East Tennessee State University, and Assistant Dean and Department Chair at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Areas of academic expertise include all levels of nursing curriculum development, APRN education, interprofessional education, program assessment/evaluation, clinical and diagnostic reasoning, critical social theory, and qualitative research methodologies. Dr. Smith developed an innovative interprofessional Clinical
Fellows Model for faculty-student collaborative practice, providing NP students
with effective interprofessional learning experiences. She is a Fellow of the
AACN Fuld Academic Nursing Leadership Program, Higher Learning Commission
Assessment Academy, and NONPF Mentoring in Community-Based Advanced Practice
Nursing Program. Her research contributes to improved skills for
NP diagnostic reasoning, relationship-based care, and chronic disease management among vulnerable and underserved populations.
