Gwen Hooper PhD, FNP-BC, CUNP, FAUNA, FAANP
Gwen Hooper, PhD, RN FNP-BC, CUNP, FAUNA, FAANP is a retired Associate Professor. She retired with Tenure from The University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing in 2024 where she taught for 10 years in the Family and Doctoral Nurse Practitioner programs of study.
Much of Dr. Hooper's professional service has been with the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA) where she served as President for two consecutive years. For her service and commitment to the SUNA organization she was inducted as a Fellow in Urologic Nursing in 2022.
Dr. Hooper's clinical practice and career have focused on prostate cancer and women's urologic health. She became the first nurse practitioner in the Department of Surgery, Division of Urology at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, where she mentored and trained wound ostomy continence nurses, medical students and urology residents. After leaving the University of Kentucky and moving to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, she maintained a faculty practice in female urology.
Dr. Hooper is both a Hartford Institute of Geriatric Research Scholar and a Deep South Minority Aging Research Scholar. She was awarded the Catherine-Anne Lawrence Literary Excellence Award from the Society of Urologic Nursing Editorial Board, the AORN Journal Writers Award, Outstanding Nurse Practitioner Educator Award by the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama, The Capstone College of Nursing Board of Visitors Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award for her outstanding commitment to teaching and the Innovation Spark Scholar Award from The University of Alabama College of Continuing Studies in recognition of excellence and innovation in Online Teaching.
